Queer collaborations in the capital

Queer politics and social networking will collide at Queer Collaborations in Canberra in July.

The annual conference, popular among university students from across the country, is planning more social activities than previous years in a move away from its overtly political origins.

Workshops range from pick-up techniques to gender theory, safe BDSM play to same-sex marriage activism.

Some still plan to use the conference to prepare for the National Day of Action on 1 August.

The conference last year was so political -” it was great, National Union of Students queer officer Heidi Claus said. ANU [bid] explicitly on the basis of less political and more fun. But if enough people want to do something more, we can help.

Early registrations, starting at $45, close this week, but anyone can pay a higher rate on the door.

info: Queer Collaborations 2009 runs from 13-18 July at Australian National University. Register at qc09.anu.edu.au.

  1. “STOP EVERYONE! There’s milk in this soup!!!!” aaah. QC brings back some funny memories….

  2. As someone else who was there last year at the bidding, the claim that -œANU [bid] explicitly on the basis of less political and more fun. But if enough people want to do something more, we can help. is absolute rubbish!

ANU bid on the basis of opening up political activism to multiple forms, rather than the traditional protesting, signature-gathering and letter-writing of previous years.

If anything, this year’s QC will allow more people to become more political through the broadening of avenues for political activism.

  3. Hiya! Just a quick note from the QC09 team.

This year Canberra will be lots of fun, with social events each night of the conference and a mini-carnival on Friday. We’re also devoting more time than ever to political organisation and understanding issues within the queer community, with a full day focussing on tolerance within our own community and the importance of Queer Collaborations and another full day for a political action at parliament house, a unique opportunity for queer students and our supporters to get the equality message across to the pollies. It will be a great week in the nation’s capital where everyone can network, have some fun and get their voice heard. We look forward to seeing everyone here in Canberra in July!
