Rainbows on the harbour

The rainbow flag-adorned Different Strokes Dragon Boat team will take part in this year’s annual Darling Harbour boat races as part of Chinese New Year celebrations.

The regatta is one of the most fun and colourful of the state races, so we really want to encourage our community to come down and cheer us on, club president Alastair Paterson told Sydney Star Observer.

The team will be difficult to miss as they take part in two race categories -” the Premier Open for any age and sex and the Premier Mixed category which features groups with 10 men and 10 women.

We will be competing in the heats in the morning and we’ll certainly be easy to spot with our new race tops. They’re proudly emblazoned with our team name on the front, rainbow sashes on the sleeve and the club logo on the back, Paterson said.

As part of our process for designing the new logo we looked into the heritage of the traditional owners for the lands and waterways where we practise.

Rather than feature the typical mythical, or people’s general conceptions of dragons on our logo we decided to adopt the eastern water dragon of Sydney as it’s the real water dragon of our rivers and waterways.
