Gay divers making a splash

It’s that time of year again for members of the SUBS gay and lesbian social scuba diving club — annual memberships are due.

Memberships can be paid on Mardi Gras Fair Day at the SUBS stall in Sports Alley, or by mailing a cheque to the club’s post office box, PO Box A155, Sydney South, NSW 1235.

Each year members must complete and sign a membership form in order for the club’s liability insurance to be valid. The cost, $45 for individuals and $60 for households, helps to cover the cost of liability insurance, Fair Day, club BBQs and website costs.

And it’s a great time to become a member, with SUBS planning an exciting dive weekend for March 25-27.

SUBS members will dive at two great locations north of Newcastle, Forster and Seal Rocks. Grey nurse sharks are resident all year round in both areas. Hire equipment is available, and the SUBS will be travelling in style on the 10.6m catamaran dive boat Avanti, complete with hot showers, two boarding ladders and a generous deck with sun awning.

The dives will be led by experienced guides who ensure you get the best out your diving time with them.

Primary accommodation for the weekend will be the Blue Water Divers’ Lodge, a five-bedroom house with share facilities right in the heart of Forster. There are three bunkrooms and two double rooms.

The cost of the diving trip is $300 per person (excluding equipment hire) — register your interest by calling dive coordinator Daryl on 0412 340 613 or emailing him at [email protected]

Before that, the SUBS will need a few helping hands from members at Fair Day on February 20.

They need members to staff the stall in shifts from 11am—5pm. It’s a fun day of meeting people and telling them all about diving — and the SUBS stall is situated nice and close to Victoria Park Pool, so don’t forget to bring your speedos.
