Melbourne gay and lesbian-friendly volleyball team, the Spikers, is getting set for a busy season.

The group will hold its end-of-year picnic this month following big wins in South Australia at the Adelaide Spikers’ Parri Estate Tournament.

The Melbourne volleyballers earned the title of kings and queens of the court, winning gold medals in the A, B and C Grades, and a bronze in A Grade.

To celebrate, the Spikers will meet on Sunday, December 11 to picnic in North Fitzroy’s Edinburgh Gardens. The event is free for members, $10 for friends and family. Lunch will be served from 1pm. BYO drinks.

To get the team in top shape after the Christmas break, training is scheduled for January and February. Making the most of the summer sun, training sessions will be moved from indoors to St Kilda beach.

The Spikers will also take part in the Midsumma Festival Carnival Day on January 15, and will hit the streets on February 5 for Pride March.

The Spikers’ Summer Slam Tournament, open to all levels, will be held on January 21 at Kew High School. Entry for teams is now open. Teams better get in quickly as only 16 team spots are available.

The Spikers will then take part in the Queer Sports Alliance Melbourne sports day on January 22. The event is part of Midsumma and will be the day the club opens it doors to newcomers.

The team will showcase its skills from 1.30pm at the South Yarra Sports Centre.
