Past Queensland Family First Senate candidate Wendy Francis has been appointed the new Queensland director of the Australian Christian Lobby.

Francis was embroiled in a Twitter controversy last year when she likened gay marriage to “legalising child abuse”.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Francis also likened children born to same-sex parented families to the stolen generations.

“It is one thing to be homosexual; it’s another thing altogether to then impose that on children,” she told the newspaper.

Following a backlash, Francis blamed a miscommunication with staff for the comments, but later accepted them as her own and issued an apology.

Perth mother Kelly Pilgrim Byrne, who is in a same-sex relationship, lodged an anti-discrimination complaint with the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commission claiming Francis’ comments were homophobic.

According to the ACL website, Francis is a former editor of the Queensland Baptist Magazine.

“I have always believed strongly in the need for Christians to influence politics and believe ACL’s non-partisan expression of that is a most effective way to achieve that,” Francis said.
