An Unbiased success

An Unbiased success

On March 11, 10 members and friends of Unbiased Bowling left Sydney for the 2nd Asia-Pacific Outgames in Wellington, New Zealand to join another 10 who had departed the previous week. In the lawn bowls field there were at least 60 entries, mainly from Australia and New Zealand.

With the help and great support from the Marrickville Bowling Club, who ran a fundraising raffle, Unbiased Bowling had team shirts printed with its logo, adding to the sense of team camaraderie on the trip.

The games were played with great friendship and also that little bit of rivalry that creeps into any sporting contest — particularly when Australian and New Zealand teams go head to head.

On the first day of competition, 83 elimination games were played using time rather than the number of ends. Unbiased was represented in all divisions which consisted of Singles, Pairs and Fours.

The final results were: Singles: gold to South Australia, silver and bronze to New Zealand; Pairs: gold, silver and bronze to Unbiased Bowling; and Fours: gold, silver and bronze (plus fourth placing) to Unbiased Bowling.

A composite Fours team made up of two Unbiased members and two Kiwis (the Anzacs) was invited to play at the last minute and won the silver medal in the B grade division.

“We went as 20 bowling friends and came back as 20 friends who play bowls,” Unbiased Bowling public relations officer Peter Manson said.

Unbiased Bowling is based at the Marrickville Bowling and Recreation Club, and welcomes anyone who would like to take part in its weekly bowling sessions every Sunday at 1pm. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for news of the club’s planned special Easter Sunday bowling session.
