THE PIPETTES – EARTH VS. THE PIPETTES
The Pipettes released one of the stand out debuts of 2006: the three-piece girl group’s mix of ‘60s harmonies and spiky lyrics were a perfect post-millennial Spector homage.
Now, four years later (an eternity in the world of pop) and with a raft of line-up changes (they’ve now settled as a duo), the sheen seems to have worn off the group.
Earth Vs. The Pippettes falters when it tries to expand the girls’ repertoire from retro-chic to overly sugary pop – Captain Rhythm sounds like the ugly lovechild of Steps, S Club 7 and Ace of Base.
