Blessed – Lucinda Williams
Alt country icon Lucinda Williams’ last album was a surprisingly lacklustre affair — it seemed the happiness that came with finding love with manager Tom Overby in 2006 had dulled the power of her songwriting. Thankfully, Blessed is a noticeable return to form, with Williams spending much of the album mulling over issues of life and death. “I’m 57 but I could be seven years old because I will never be able to comprehend the expansiveness of what I’ve just learned,” she sings on album highlight Copenhagen, her bruised voice almost cracking as she sings of the death of a friend.
