VAC appoints first female president
The Victorian AIDS Council/Gay Men’s Health Centre has voted in its first female president.
Former journalist and policy researcher Kirsty Machon will take over the top job from outgoing president Michael Williams who has sat in the chair for the last 12 months.
Machon has been involved in the HIV sector for well over a decade, starting as a volunteer in the early 1990s. She then went on to work with the National Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA) as editor of Positive Living magazine and as a health and treatments policy analyst.
VAC/GMHC CEO Matt Dixon welcomed Machon’s appointment and said her skills will assist the organisation as it starts an overall review process.
“In this [review] process VAC/GMHC will ask itself, but most importantly its partners and the communities it serves, some fundamental questions about its position and its future,” Dixon told the Star Observer.
“Kirsten will lead us expertly though this process.”
Machon joined the organisation’s board in mid 2011 in response to a call for nominations from the community.
