Cabaret inspiration revealed

Christopher and his Kind — a new BBC drama chronicling the formative years of gay author Christopher Isherwood (Goodbye to Berlin, A Single Man) — will screen at this year’s Mardi Gras Film Festival. Isherwood (Matt Smith) escapes a repressive London for a hedonistic and politically unstable Berlin of the 1930s.

In the city’s thriving underground gay culture, he meets intoxicating characters, including those who inspired his creation of Sally Bowles (Imogen Poot) in Goodbye to Berlin and Mr Norris (Toby Jones) of Mr Norris Changes Trains and the unassuming street cleaner with whom he falls in love.

It screens at Hoyts Entertainment Quarter on February 18, 7.30pm and February 25, 9pm, and the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta on February 27, 12.30pm.
