The gay mastermind behind the Four Seasons

The gay mastermind behind the Four Seasons

With Jersey Boys set to finish its mammoth Australian run by the end of the year, cast member Daniel Scott — who played Felicia in the stage production of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert — admitted to the Star Observer that he had limited expectations of the show’s success when it opened in July 2009.

“I honestly didn’t think it was going to do very well. I didn’t think Australia would have the connection with New Jersey or the Four Seasons that America does. Obviously I had to eat my words!”

Scott plays Bob Crewe, the Four Seasons’ flamboyant manager, in the show. While Crewe’s sexuality is never openly discussed, he’s clearly presented as a gay man.

“He certainly didn’t hide who he was, but it just wasn’t spoken about. Apparently when Bob first saw the show [in the US] he said, ‘I was never that gay!’.

“So [Four Seasons member] Bob Gaudio got out a photo of Bob back in the day standing there posing like a teapot, dressed in a kaftan and holding a martini. He never questioned it again,” Scott laughed.

“And he was hot! I was chuffed when I first read the script, because he’s first introduced as ‘a very handsome man’.

“But he’s really created this incredible persona for himself as a music manager and record producer — ‘gay’ just happens to be one small part of who he is.”
