Wheeler’s big gay week

Wheeler’s big gay week

The Wheeler Centre will celebrate the cerebral this month with a ‘Big Gay Week’ of queer events.

Events will focus on politics and writing, romance and taboos, and the agonies and ecstasies of being queer.

Much-loved author Armistead Maupin will be taking part in the week of activities, bringing his new tales to the Athenaeum Theatre on February 27.

In 1976, Maupin launched his newspaper serial, Tales of the City, in The San Francisco Chronicle.

Tales grew into an international sensation and Maupin’s six volumes are now multi-million bestsellers published in 11 languages. His latest novel is Mary Ann in Autumn, a new Tales of the City story.

Other highlights include the return of one of last year’s crowd favourites, Erotic Fan Fiction. The adults-only night will see writers read a short piece of naughty work about a celebrity of fictional character composed specifically for the night.

For singles, there are two Literary Speed Dating events (men on Thursday, March 3, women the following evening). This initiative gives same-sex inclined book-lovers the chance to find a kindred spirit. Both events are held at the Wheeler Centre (176 Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne).

info: Armistead Maupin is at the Athenaeum Theatre on Sunday, February 27 from 7.30pm. For a full list of events or to book, visit www.wheelercentre.com
