Blue Mountains gets more social

An informal gay men’s group is being formed in the Blue Mountains with a focus on social connection for gay men of all age groups through an exchange of ideas, concerns and interests.

The group will be held on weekends at a Katoomba venue, with further details to be announced soon.

A number of gay men have already interest in the group, which has the support of ACON.

ACON Western Sydney development officer Gavin Prendergast said isolation and lack of social hubs were often problems for gay men in greater western Sydney.

“ACON strongly supports any effort to challenge this and has found that local groups are often the best at creating sustainable networks for gay men,” Prendergast said.

Anthony Brown of the University of Western Sydney’s Men’s Health Information and Resource Centre has also backed the group.

“There is plenty of really good evidence that getting involved with your community is good for your health and wellbeing,” Brown said.

“The Men’s Health Information and Resource Centre has worked with a number of men’s groups over the years. We welcome the creation of this group for gay men in the mountains, and certainly encourage men to get involved.”

Group organisers said subjects up for discussion by the group could be anything from serious topics like health and discrimination to personal interests such as travel or collectables.
