City’s green sponsorship to be renewed

The City of Sydney will mark its 10th anniversary of financial support to the Mardi Gras parade with a float calling on legal relationship recognition of same-sex couples.

The 65-person float is under construction, but a sneak peak was available earlier this week.Although the current three-year $120,000 per year sponsorship will end after the parade, the City has indicated it has no plans to pull out and will negotiate a new deal for next year.

The City of Sydney has been a financial supporter of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras for ten years and will continue to support this vital and vibrant event, a spokeswoman said.

Mardi Gras displays the diversity and creative energy of Sydney to the world. It plays a valuable role in breaking down barriers and promoting equality and respect through an entertaining, humorous and fabulous celebration.”

The City has been encouraging New Mardi Gras to think seriously about minimising its waste and maximising recycling by charging for street cleaning. That freebie disappeared three years ago when the City bumped its parade sponsorship from $70,000 to $120,000 and mirrors arrangements with every other event and festival in Sydney.
