Fat Tuesday is back
Prominent LGBTI charity The Aurora Group has announced that tickets are on sale for its sixth annual Fat Tuesday event in February.
Aside from being a major benefactor of queer youth counselling service Twenty10, the Aurora Group conducts regular fundraisers for smaller charities and initiatives on a yearly basis. This year’s recipients include ACON, Cancer Council peer support groups for lesbians diagnosed with cancer, LGBTI clients of the Wayside Chapel, GenQ education programs to combat homophobia in regional centres on the Central Coast and Broken Hill, and the Junction Neighbourhood Centre supporting the gay and lesbian Indigenous community at La Perouse.
Aurora Group event director Wayne Cox said the event would be moving back to Oxford Street for the first time in three years.
“We experimented with moving Fat Tuesday around – Carriageworks in Newtown, the Civic in the CBD – but we decided to bring it back to Slide on Oxford Street to better reflect the community,” Cox said.
‘Fat’ or ‘Shrove’ Tuesday was traditionally celebrated as the last day before the commencement of the Christian festival Lent. Mardi Gras derives its name from the literal French translation of ‘fat Tuesday’.
