2UE apologises
Radio station 2UE this week settled two gay hate speech cases in relation to comments made by presenters John Laws, Steve Price and Sam Newman.
Gary Burns received a public apology on Tuesday from 2UE presenters John Laws and Steve Price for homophobic comments made in 2003.
Burns took Laws and Price to court in 2003, complaining that comments they had made while talking about the TV show The Block vilified homosexuals. In 2004 Burns won his case, with the NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal finding Laws’s and Price’s comments were capable of inciting severe ridicule of homosexual men and therefore breached the vilification provisions of the Anti-Discrimination Act.
Laws and Price initially appealed the decision, but on Tuesday decided to settle the case and issue an on-air apology and written apology. 2UE will also donate $10,000 to the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.
2UE also settled this week with Michael Dempsey from Tasmania, in another gay hate speech case involving Laws and Sam Newman making derogatory comments about TV personality Carson Kressley. Burns had also made a complaint about this incident.
Support the Star Observer… while you still can
LGBTQIA+ media is under threat. Queer content is censored by tech conglomerates who amplify bigotry and push out AI slop — so we receive less financial support than ever.
When our community is muzzled and intolerance intensifies, we need queer media more than ever. Your donation means we can continue paying queer journalists to write queer news.
Don’t rely on the straight lies of big tech – support Star Observer instead and donate now.

As a gay man myself, I am NO fan of Carson Kressley at all. But stupid radio blabber-mouths who never shut up let alone talk about the issues that really matter, instead they are just rude, filthy, anti-everthing [racist, sexist, heterosexist] and just talk about football all day and night – Radio and churches just makes me sick! If I was on radio, I will talk about the 897 issues in Australian society that really need discussing or addressing.
