The ALSO Fabulous Opportunity Shop will close down on October 4 after almost seven years of trading.

Following unsuccessful negotiations with the landlord, ALSO Foundation board member Wayne Elliott said closing the op-shop located on Smith St in Collingwood was the only option.

“The shop is not making money, it’s running at a loss like most retail businesses would be,” he said.

Elliott said the board had first tried to bring down the rental price, then tried to renegotiate a month-by-month agreement but had received no response from the landlord.

“We have also been in negotiations with other organisations about taking over the shop or joining us in reference to running the shop and no-one has come forward and I’m not condemning them for doing that,” he said.

In 2007, the shop’s staff were awarded the Leader Newspaper Small Business Award for the not-for-profit sector.

The shop opened in 2005.
