Amorosi finds her voice in the real world
Known as one of the great voices of Australian music, holding huge hit singles Absolutely Everybody and Shine, Vanessa Amorosi has already proved herself as a musical force. Not one to rest on her laurels the singer/songwriter trekked to Los Angeles last year to produce her follow-up album Somewhere in the Real World.
Without a record deal Amorosi was just another hopeful singer in the States. Making the most of her anonymity, the Australian princess of pop created a fresh sound with a whole new production team.
It was really hard in the beginning. There are so many aspiring artists in LA. They all talk the talk but couldn’t deliver. The hardest thing for me was talking about myself, but once I got in the door things happened pretty quickly, Amorosi told Sydney Star Observer.
I wanted to work with people who didn’t know me, people who had no idea of what I was about or what my sound was about. It really did help because I had to explain myself and define what I was about.
Before flying overseas Amorosi had a key sound in mind and sought out specific people who would help her vision.
I worked with Ron Aniello for his more old school, soul-orientated style. But then I also love the Janis Joplin rock elements so I enlisted Greg Wells. The guy who mixed it, Chris Lord-Alge, has worked with Green Day and Tina Turner -¦ I knew my sounds. I just needed to convince these people to work with me.
Only 18 when she released her debut album The Power, Amorosi, now 26, delivers a record that reflects her new found maturity both musically and emotionally.
I think this album represents me finally. When I listen to Absolutely Everybody and Shine now, I sound like a baby, because I was a baby.
I took a long time making sure that every song on the album meant something to me. I wanted it to be one of those albums you buy, where you listen to it from the beginning to the end and it takes you on a journey.
