Wear It Purple Day (August 28) Inspires Fun & Free LGBTQ+ Events Across Sydney

Wear It Purple Day will officially be held this Friday 28 August, and this year, the special day commemorating the courage of LGBTQIA+ youth will see a number of fun (and free) events take over Sydney’s Inner West.

What’s On Thursday, August 27

First up, something for the artists among us: Newtown Library will be hosting a Wear It Purple Day Craft Session on Thursday 27 August (a day prior to the official Wear It Purple Day). From 4pm to 6pm, participants of all ages will be welcome to indulge in some purple-themed crafts and light refreshments in a friendly and inclusive library setting.

Next, on Friday August 28, the official celebration will begin with a morning tea to be held at the Inner West Pride Centre from 8am to 9:30am. The event, hosted by Twenty10, will include free cupcakes, facepainting, pronoun pins, Wear It Purple official merchandise, and a drag performance. 

If you’re quick, you’ll be able to race straight from morning tea in Newtown to Chippendale for Mental Health Carers NSW’s own Wear It Purple Day event. Also to be held on August 28, the community event will run from 10am to 1pm at the Dale Studio and host representatives from Twenty10 and The Gender Centre. Alongside panels discussing diversity, inclusion, stigma, and intersectionality, participants can expect a keynote address delivered by young carer and lived experience advocate Luke Randala. 

What’s On Next Month

While these events will mark the end of the official Wear It Purple Day celebrations, Sydney’s inner westies will have to wait only one week before their next big LGBTQ+ community event. 

Indeed, on Thursday 10 September, ACON’s LOVE Project will host a gathering for LGBTQ+ people and allies aged 18+. To be held at the Inner West Pride Centre from 10am to 12pm, the event invited attendees to enjoy some social time, connect across generations, and find out about local health and support services, not to mention enjoy a special guest appearance from The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
