Diverse and deadly

A short film and website will be launched next week to celebrate the diversity of Victoria’s Aboriginal communities.

The Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) and Family Planning Victoria (FPV) will launch the film and website on Thursday, April 26 at Hares and Hyenas Bookstore, Fitzroy, 6-8pm.

The eight-minute film, Celebrating Sexual Diversity, features candid interviews and advice on coming out for young people.

“I was taught to be true to yourself and if you respect yourself, it just follows,” one interviewee said.

“Don’t feel like you can’t talk to anybody if your family doesn’t accept you at the start. I think they will in the end because we’re blackfellas,” another interviewee said.

“Just feel that you are supported and look for that support. Don’t think there’s none, because there is.”

The interviews were filmed at the 2011 Outblack and Songlines NAIDOC event.

The website, Diverse and Deadly, has a wealth of information for Indigenous health, sex education and LGBT organisations and support groups.
