Hear: Brett Every – Fairy Godmother’s Gone To Vegas

Queer Sydney singer-songwriter Brett Every’s second album is a guest-filled affair, with everyone from folkster Melanie Horsnell to drag queen Trevor Ashley popping up over its eleven tracks. Every wears his heart on his sleeve, and songs like Prince Charming and The Night Is Not Long Enough offer a recognisably gay male perspective on love and relationships – the sort that’s too rarely heard in music (even music made by gay men, who too often opt for vague, gender-neutral lyrics). Most affecting is Every’s gorgeous cover of Bette Midler’s heartreaking piano ballad Come Back, Jimmy Dean, showing the gruff-voiced troubadour can hold his own with any of the singing divas he admires. www.brettevery.com
