Manly gets a new gay group

“He called me a lesbian and my friends fags, then he spat in my face … and I’d like to thank him.”

Every movement can be traced back to a specific occasion when an individual is confronted with someone or something that acts as a catalyst and they are faced with a choice — to do nothing or to stand up and say, “Enough”.

For Amanda Fera, who was out one afternoon celebrating her friend Dave’s birthday, the catalyst was being spat on for no other reason than being gay. With the help of friend Dave Burrell, the Manly Gay and Lesbian Community was born.

Dave, Amanda and their friends in the gay and lesbian community all have stories about being victimised and made to feel inferior because of their sexuality — so Amanda and Dave created a fellowship where like-minded people can get together and be themselves in a non-threatening environment.

The group aims to provide social support and services for gays and lesbians in and around the Manly/Northern Beaches and North Shore area.

Since MGLC came to fruition a few weeks ago, Amanda and Dave have been overwhelmed by the support from allies on the northern beaches.

The local business response has also been astounding with Henry Afrikas donating its cocktail lounge for the launch party on December 6.
