Adapt Or Die (Ten Years Of Remixes): Everything But The Girl

Without remixes, Everything But The Girl would be another couple of pretty-sounding shoe gazers. Fantastic sounding, yes, but nothing that you’d keep on high rotation for say, 10 years.

Luckily, Ben Watt (the male half of the duo) recognises the power of the remix in making particular songs live on past their original use-by date. Also luckily, the remixers included in Adapt Or Die -“ the first EBTG release since 1999 -“ recognise the power of the prettiness contained in Tracey Thorn (the female half’s) sad voice.

Their remixes highlight the bones of the original songs, rather than try to make them something that they’re not. For example, Dave Wallace might have housed-up the classic Walking Wounded, and Todd Terry did something similar to Wrong, but they’re still not really ones to get up and freak out to on the dancefloor.
