Amnesty calls for marriage

The Australian Government is failing to live up to its UN treaty obligations as long as it continues to deny same-sex marriage, Amnesty International Australia has warned.
Writing to the Senate Marriage Inquiry, Amnesty reminded the Government of the statement they signed last year, along with 66 other countries, to put an end to human rights abuses against the worldwide GLBT community.
“The supporting countries reaffirmed the principle of non-discrimination, which requires that human rights apply equally to every human being regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,” Amnesty’s government relations advisor Louise Allen stated.
“Amnesty International believes that the removal of discrimination should extend to laws relating to the legal union of couples, otherwise known as marriage.
“To continue to prevent same-sex couples from entering into a legally binding union on the basis of sexual orientation is discriminatory and goes against the internationally recognised principle outlined.”
Amnesty pointed out that the right of adults to enter into consensual marriage is enshrined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

  1. Yes , Kevin is not much better than Howard. If we want something to happen , we can’t just wait for the stupid government to do something .

  2. By not recognising foreign same sex marriages, thanks to Howard’s urgent amendments to the Marriage Act in 2004, Australia is also arguably in breach of its obligations under the Hague Convention on the Recognition of Foreign Marriages.

  3. As long as we have a Happy Clapper Prime Minister in power we will never have full equality. He supports hate groups such the Australian Christian Lobby that say we are child sex offenders and dangerous to be around Children.

Our Prime Minister is funding and promoting these groups who, ironically, have called on members not to vote for him as he is not nutty enough. What part of that does he not get?

He is attending the ALC Conference and will stand with George Pell talking about families, and how homosexuals never really make a family. http://www.acl.org.au/national/browse.stw?article_id=28624

Kevin Rudd has tried to court the irrational and now he is paying the price. He can always come around to support the gay and lesbian community and address the 300,000 or so people I saw at Mardi Gra and announce an end to discrimination against us.

Come on Kevin, where the Bloody Hell are you on human rights? You are as slippery as those corrupt politicians caught up with Sir Jo in Queensland. He well and trully fucked us that is for sure.

At least Amnesty is a potent reminder of reality of us all.
