Aurora’s star shines brighter than ever

Event organisers believe Saturday night’s Aurora Dinner raised close to $75,000.

More than 400 people attended the sell-out event at Sydney Town Hall which raises money for gay and lesbian projects and organisations.

Aurora chairwoman Jane Marsden said she was pleased with the success of the glittering 2007 event.

“The 2007 Aurora Annual Dinner has raised important funds for our community. This money is much needed to continue the work of many vital projects, organisations and support services in the community,” Marsden said.

“This is why Aurora exists – and I can’t thank our guests enough for their generosity in attending the event and digging deep for the auctions and raffles on the night.”

A highlight of the event was guest speaker Georgina Beyer, who travelled from New Zealand especially for the annual dinner. Beyer is known for being the world’s first transsexual elected as a mayor and as a member of parliament. She delivered a rallying, stirring speech about the importance of community and the need to “be who we are”.

Last year, Aurora funded Twenty10 GLBT Youth Support, the Gay & Lesbian Counselling Service, the Gender Centre, Lesbian & Gay Anti Violence Project, ACON’s lesbians with cancer project, Rebellion, the Penrith / Mount Druitt Same-Sex Attracted Youth Project and the Same Sex Domestic Violence Interagency.
