Convicts back in winners’ circle
The Convicts 1 welcomed back some key players in their match against Waverley at the weekend. Greg Jumbo Holmes shrugged off a nagging foot injury to take his vital place in the team.
And true to reputation, Jumbo provided the ballast for the Convicts pack to run roughshod over the Waverley boys. Combining with great lineout work from Kevin Perry, the Convicts dominated early possession and ran in the first try.
The day only got gloomier for the guys from Waverley as the Convicts kept the pressure up. A 60m break orchestrated by the Convicts glamour couple saw James create space for the flying Charles Gregory who raced away to score. Charles was another welcome return to the Convicts side and deserving man of the match.
With another try before the half-time break the Convicts issued replacements, giving every team member a shot at the glory.
The second half was more of the same for our boys with the replacement players filling the bill. Kevin Perry took over the lineout for the first time ever and maintained a 100 percent success rate.
With further tries to Gus Donald and James Saunders, the Convicts completed the rout 33-5, able to sing the team song for the first time this year.
After last week’s narrow loss, the Convicts II side was keen to start its first half against the old enemy Mosman. The first half saw the Convicts start strong and, after sustained pressure, a great run from big Aron saw him score out wide and the Convicts were on the board 5-0.
Mosman fought back hard but with some steely defence the Convicts II put their bodies on the line and went to the break with their 5-0 lead intact.
The second half saw some great running rugby from the Convicts but Mosman’s last line of defence was holding. Then big Stu took the ball from the blindside and broke through their line, crunching players along the way. Mosman hit back to score their first try and the game was locked up at 5-5. The Convicts were determined not to let another one slip away and threw everything at Mosman. The pressure told and another good break from big Aron saw him score his second. Convicts II’s win was 10-5.
