Harvey Fierstein will return to the Broadway stage next month for the first time since 1987. The writer and star of Torch Song Trilogy will play Edna Turnblad in the musical version of the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. Fierstein told The New York Times that he will not be playing Divine. I will always be grateful, because for this brief shining moment, I am Ethel Merman, starring in a musical, said Fierstein.
