Exploring how we manage our alcohol and other drug use can be done both individually and on a larger scale, within our community. Northern Rivers’ GLBT members will have the opportunity to explore the issues of alcohol and poly-drug use within our community at an information forum to be held 27 June at The Winsome Hotel from 5.pm till 7pm. Feeling creative? Tropical Fruits is seeking volunteers to participate in Lismore’s Lantern Parade. This parade, to celebrate the winter solstice, is a huge community event. Lismore’s main street, bathed in candlelight, comes to life as the parade meanders to Wilson’s Riverbank. Call Tropical Fruits on 6622 6440 if you are interested in helping out.

People volunteer for varying reasons -” social contact, to reinforce study, to use existing skills or to learn new ones. ACON values its volunteers. Since the introduction of new HIV therapies in 1996, people are living longer with HIV. A peer support group simply named Getting On With It will be meeting in Clunes to explore this very issue. It meets on Friday 13 June from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. If you have been poz for some time, come along.

On Saturday 19 July from 10am to 4pm ACON are hosting a group for PLWHA called the Happiness Workshop. This peer workshop will explore what happiness actually is, and how to obtain and sustain it. If you find yourself in Lismore, feel free to drop in for a cuppa and a chat. Newspapers and a public access computer are available. ACON NR stocks many services’ brochures for your perusal and can refer you to appropriate services if needed. Other services available include low-cost vitamins and safe-sex supplies, a small borrowing library, a GLBT accommodation board and a lively community notice board.
