NSW Health gets GLBT advisory committee

The Deputy Premier and Minister for Health, Carmel Tebbutt, has today announced the setting up of a Ministerial Advisory Committee to advise the Health Minister and Department of Health on issues affecting the GLBT community.

“The new Ministerial

Advisory Committee will advise on a broad range of issues that affect the health and wellbeing of the GLBT Community and support the development of a NSW Health GLBT health and wellbeing agenda,” Tebbutt said this morning at the launch of ACON’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2010-2013.

“I can also that it’s going to be chaired by Prof Andrew Grulich, who is a very experienced professional and I think he’ll do a fantastic job.”

Grulich is the head of the HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Program at the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research.

Tebbutt told the Star Observer that the committee would be made up of both community members and health professionals.

“We are still working through the details of who will be on the committee but it will be people who’ve got mental health expertise, drug and alcohol expertise and broad health expertise,” Tebbutt said.

She had not yet raised the idea with the NSW Opposition but expected bipartisan support from the Coalition for a GLBT focussed committee for NSW Health.

Tebbutt said the Advisory Committee had come about as a result of lobbying by ACON.

“One of the issues that we discussed last year was the importance for the Health Minister and the Health Department to have a an Advisory Committee that looks more broadly at the health and wellbeing agenda for the GLBT community.”
