One Nation Scrambling After Ex-Candidate Calls Gay People Mentally Ill

One Nation’s Pauline Hanson and Barnaby Joyce have distanced themselves from the party’s failed Western Australian candidate, Parminder Singh. It comes after Singh, who had been number three on One Nation WA’s Legislative Council ticket in the 2025 state election, made a number of homophobic comments in an interview with Perth comedian Jasky Singh (AKA “Mr Sikkant”).
Among Singh’s comments were the claim that pride parades “advertise” homosexuality, that busy parents were responsible for their children being gay, and that being gay is a “mental illness”.
The comments immediately attracted public scrutiny, with many pointing out that homosexuality has not been considered a disorder since 1973. Among the critics was Labor MP Dr Katrina Stratton, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health, who called Singh’s views deeply harmful and outdated.
“I hope that others, including leaders in this place, step up to that megaphone to denounce these dangerous views, to say there is no place for them in modern Australia, in modern Western Australia,” Stratton said.
Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Distance Themselves From Singh
Hanson, who just months ago went viral for her own attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, addressed Singh’s comments in an interview with reporters at Parliament House. This began with announcing he was no longer a One Nation Candidate.
“I know he’s made comments,” Hanson said. “He’s not a candidate. He’s an individual that has his own views. He’s not standing for One Nation … they’re not my views.”
Similarly, One Nation federal MP Barnaby Joyce denounced Singh’s views on Wednesday night. In the interview with ABC, Joyce highlighted Singh’s removal from the party’s website, without outright disendorsing the ex-candidate.
“I don’t concur with his views and to be quite frank,” said Joyce, “he obviously hasn’t been around farms.”
Barnaby later clarified this was a reference to homosexual animals, before calling One Nation “one of the gayest parties in Australia”.
