Romney donated to NOM

It’s been revealed that the political action committee (PAC) of Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney made a $10,000 donation to the National Organization of Marriage (NOM) during its fight to repeal California’s marriage equality law in the Proposition 8 vote.

Romney has made his opposition to same-sex marriage clear, but it was not known how he contributed to NOM until last month.

The Huffington Post reports that records filed by Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC with the Federal Election Commission did not include details of that $10,000 donation.

The record of payment was uncovered when a whistleblower sent details to the pro-gay rights Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

Asked for comment, a Romney aide said the donation was made through the PAC’s Alabama chapter.

“It’s clear now that Romney was a major financial donor to Prop 8,” said HRC’s vice president for communications Fred Sainz said.

“But it’s also clear that his campaign very cleverly hid this contribution in an obscure Alabama PAC.”

The revelations came off the back of public criticism of NOM after it was revealed the organisation plotted ways to turn African Americans and gays against each another.
