The Melbourne Rovers soccer club are searching for men and women interested in taking part in the Wellington Outgames’ recently announced football tournament.

Buoyed by winning their first trophy in Sydney in October, the Rovers are looking to their first overseas adventure. The club is putting the call out to players participating in mainstream clubs to join them for the Outgames experience.

Wellington will be hosting a seven-a-side mens’ and seven-a-side womens’ competition with Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, Sydney and Melbourne expected to field teams.

The Rovers are running a summer season of social soccer through November and inviting new players of any level to come along for a kick, and maybe get more involved.

“The Rovers were formed after the Melbourne Outgames in 2008, and received financial support from the GLISA A/P Legacy fund,” Rovers president Heath Wilson said.

“We believe this will be the first Asia Pacific soccer tournament for gay players and it will be a fantastic opportunity to play in a competition with football teams from other cities, and spend the week with competitors in the 17 other sports.”
