Steeling up the mountain

You better start practising your cardio regime if you want to take out either the title of the Man of the Mountain or Woman of Steel at this year’s Sports Day Out, says Frontrunners trainer Wayne Morgan.

Back by popular demand at this year’s Sports Day Out is the event which manages to sort out the fit from the flabby in just one minute -” the 300 metre, near-vertical run up Mount Steel, the highest point in the city of Sydney.

It’s deceptive says Morgan, who isn’t giving too many training tips away in case he decides to run it.
It’s steeper than you think. You see a lot of people zoom across the flat start who then start to lag as they head up, Morgan told Sydney Star Observer.

It’s a terraced run though that has three flat sections as you head up, so it’s a real challenge for a lot of people.

It’s a pretty contested event, particularly in the men’s division, but that being said, the main point of the event and the whole day is to try and encourage people to take up healthy lifestyles.

It is for this reason that the event is handicapped, to make it more accessible to people of all ages. Participants will be given a 30 second handicap, for every year that they are older than the youngest runner -” meaning that anyone has the capability to take out the event.

If uphill hikes are a bit too daunting for you though, the Frontrunners will be holding a range of picnic races throughout the day, including the classic egg-and-spoon and sack races, as well as a cross-dressing race which will require girls to put on shaving cream and boys to whack on some lipstick as they all hurtle towards the finish line.

info: Sports Day Out will be held at Sydney Boys High on October 15. Head to the Frontrunners stall around lunch time if you want to take on the man of the mountain or woman of steel runs.
