The Absence – Melody Gardot
American jazz/blues singer Melody Gardot’s 2009 sophomore album My One and Only Thrill was her international breakthrough, so it’s to her credit that she hasn’t just offered up more of the same for its long awaited follow-up. Instead, Gardot deftly explores the world music sounds she’s been exposed to during several years of constant touring.
From the joyous, upbeat opener Mira onwards, it’s clear this is Gardot’s most confident, well rounded work to date: the straight-up jazz of her previous work is this time infused with elements of bossa nova, Latin and traditional music. Simply stunning.
