How to get legal help

by DAN STUBBS
Ever wondered what the Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC) does and whether it could help you?

You probably already know that ICLC is the specialist legal centre on LGBTI issues in NSW. This year we have already provided plenty of legal advice, represented many clients in court and delivered a number of community legal education sessions.

We’ll provide legal advice to you if you identify as LGBTI or live in the inner city area, on Tuesday or Wednesday nights (by appointment). Your legal issue could be anything from criminal to contract, discrimination to debt, surrogacy to superannuation, family law to fines — and we’ll put you with the best lawyer with the expertise to advise you.

We only rarely represent clients so when we do we try to take on cases that have a broader benefit for the LGBTI community. This year ICLC represented a man who was cross-dressing in a country town accused of indecent behavior.

The ICLC is currently representing a gay man whose long-term partner now has dementia. The partner’s family is seeking to take possession of the house as the family does not recognise that the men were in a de facto relationship which may give the partner some rights to the property.

We recently successfully defended a man who was accused of assaulting someone who was harassing him on the basis of his sexual orientation.

If you’re interested in learning about various legal issues we also run legal education sessions from time to time for various groups. Some of them have included:

— drug laws, police powers and sniffer dogs

— identity documents and other issues for transgender people and

— legal options for LGBTI people experiencing or escaping an abusive relationship.

You might have also seen us getting out and about to assist you and others in the community. You might see us at Mardi Gras events where we run the ‘Legal Info’ stand in case you have contact with the police there and you want to arrange legal advice. We also do outreach to some more marginalised communities such as sex workers and people who are transgender.

If you need legal advice, please make an appointment on 02 9332 1966 or visit www.iclc.org.au
