Wanted: dedicated volunteers

Wanted: dedicated volunteers

The NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby is preparing for its annual general meeting, and we are looking for individuals passionate about social justice to join our Committee of Management and our Fundraising Working Group.

Since its incorporation in 1988, the GLRL has been advocating for gay men, lesbians and their families.

Over the last two decades we have seen significant reforms for same-sex couples and families: de facto recognition, adoption access, surrogacy regulation, equal age of consent and policies to deal with homophobia in schools.

Despite these momentous political changes, there remain significant areas of discrimination for sexual and gender minorities. Currently marriage is only available to opposite-sex couples, and there is no comprehensive federal legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of intersex characteristics, gender identity and sexual orientation.

As a small community organisation, the GLRL relies on the passion and dedication of its members and volunteers.

In order to ensure our ongoing advocacy and campaigning work, we are seeking applicants from diverse sectors of the community to be on our Committee of Management. The committee bears primary responsibility for the organisation and oversees its strategic direction.

In addition to the staff, committee members provide invaluable contributions to various operational aspects of the organisation, in areas such as community engagement, media, law reform, fundraising, capacity building and corporate governance.

We are also specifically seeking individuals with an interest in managing finances to act as a treasurer or volunteer with our Fundraising Working Group.

Currently the GLRL relies on the generosity of its members, other community organisations and grants to fund its work. However, with no secure source of ongoing funding, we need support to diversify our finances to ensure our work continues well into the future.

If you are interested in nominating for the Committee of Management or wish to volunteer to assist with fundraising, please email our returning officer, Benjamin Keats: [email protected] or call 02 9571 5501.

All individuals on committee must be members of the GLRL. To become a member please visit http://glrl.org.au/index.php/Get-Involved/Get-Involved/Member

The GLRL AGM will be held at 6.30pm, Monday, October 31 at Surry Hills Library, 405 Crown St, Surry Hills.
