Written, directed and produced by Lucy Hayes, the documentary Carmen Rupe looks at the life of transgender icon Carmen Rupe.

After leaving New Zealand for Sydney, Carmen performed in the legendary Les Girls. She returned to New Zealand to open sex venues, and ran for mayor with, at the time, radical platforms such as legalised abortion, lowering the legal drinking age and legalising homosexual activities.

She led the Decade of the Divas float at the 2008 Mardi Gras parade.
