New study to track transgender health

transgendersymbol-e1275836466900A new research project is underway to document the experiences of people who have undergone a female-to-male (FtM) gender transition.

Conducted by researchers at the University of New England (UNE), the study will explore issues commonly faced by FtM people such as sexuality, the transition process, physical and mental health, access to support services and obstacles faced in everyday life such as employment discrimination and substance abuse.

UNE Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology Dr Amy Lykins said that the study aimed to track the broad spectrum of people who identify as transgender and the issues they face.

“It is important to understand that there are many different people who identify with being transgender – they may not be concerned with blending with the opposite sex, they may or may not seek hormone and/or sex reassignment surgery, or they may opt for only partial surgery. They may even adopt a gender neutral or ambiguous position,” Lykins said.

The study, which will be conducted online, will collect personal lived experiences of FtM people via a specially-constructed discussion board moderated by researchers. Participants will be given a pseudonym to ensure anonymity.
