Time management

Time management

A huge part of being a full-time showgirl is time management. Time and how you use it is very important.

Gone are the days of ‘drag time’ where you would wait around for hours, then finally a glamorous creature would swish in, not worried about a thing in the world.

Things were programmed at two separate times. One was the sort of start time and the other was the real start time when the show hopefully would start.

I am so glad drag time seems to have slipped away. Most shows are on time and you can usually be at a venue at the same time each week and be guaranteed to see a performance.

Everything has a dollar value. Shows are programmed with just enough time for patrons to buy a drink or two and be back in time for the next performance. Money across the bar keeps the venues operating and the shows on.

Performers also have a dollar value, so being aware of time management is very important. Knowing how long it takes to change from boy to girl, the time from home to the gig and even how long and what is involved in the performance are very important.

Years ago, a showgirl would get ready and have a running car waiting for her outside every venue. She would start at the Newtown Hotel, then race to Arq, then back to the Newtown, then finish at the Imperial Hotel. By the end she was absolutely buggered, but would go home with a purse full of money.

That’s what it’s all about — how much is in your purse at the end of the night? Time is precious to everyone. Do we have to cheapen it by putting a dollar value on it?

While you are working as a showgirl, time does have a monetary value. You are like any other worker.

Not only is it important for you and your business but for those who employ you. You have to give them value for money, and they need to know they are getting a great product for a certain amount of time.

Time management has become extremely important as I have gotten busier. I have had to put a value on my free time.

Working everywhere is great but how important is being with your friends or spending a night at home? Sometimes this is priceless.
