Alison Moyet – The Minutes

Alison Moyet – The Minutes

Album-coverProducer Guy Sigsworth has sprinkled his fairy dust over many a female singer’s work usually at exactly the right moment in their career. In 2008 he hoisted Alanis Morissette out of her grunge rut, manning the boards for the outstanding Flavours of Entanglement. Now he’s done the same for chronically underrated British songstress Alison Moyet, helping her craft possibly her best album ever – certainly her finest since 2002’s trip-hop tinged Hometime.

Taster track The Changeling is probably the most radical departure here for a singer who started out as the moody face of Yazoo and went on to a successful solo career spanning jazz, pop and rock. She’s sung just about every genre, but this is the first time we’ve heard Ms Moyet front a frenetic drum n’ bass track.

Other tracks stick closer to Sigsworth’s signature electro-ballad style, but it’s certainly a welcome change for Moyet, particularly on sumptuous songs like Remind Yourself and Apple Kisses.

And Yazoo fans from back in the day should find much to love here too – but for a treat, head straight to Love Rain Supreme, a gorgeously upbeat slice of 80s electro pop that sounds like the Alison of 30 years ago.
