Dark, dirty and stronger than ever

Extra Dirty returns for another instalment at the tail end of the Mardi Gras Parade and Party weekend. DJ and producer Javier Medina will jet in from Barcelona to headline the March 6 event alongside local favourites Scott Pullen, Feisty, Sveta, Kam Shafaati and Baby Bear.

It’ll be his second stint at the party in a year.

Extra Dirty organiser Mel Fitzpatrick — aka DJ Feisty — told the Star Observer the sexy Spaniard was a logical choice for a return set.

“Javier’s sound is right on the money for Extra Dirty. It’s percussive, very sexy and with an energy that takes you along for the ride.

“We loved Javier from the instant we met him and were incredibly impressed by his set at Extra Dirty in March last year. He instantly became part of the Extra Dirty family so we’re excited to have him back.

“We’re also lucky to have him back — he’s become quite a superstar in the last year.”

Medina, riding high on a recent signing by the Matinee group as one of their ‘Superstar DJs’, said those who’d caught his previous set could expect a few new surprises this time.

“They can expect a 2011 remix of Javier Medina. And the rest can expect always the unexpected. But lots of percussion and tech house,” he promised.

This instalment of Extra Dirty will have a bittersweet tinge for Fitzpatrick. She took over the reins of the party after the death of longtime friend and ex-partner Mandy Rollins, who masterminded events via her organisation Mandy’s Tribe.

Rollins’ death rocked the Sydney scene, but once the dust had settled, Fitzpatrick said she knew she wanted to continue her friend’s legacy.

“It was both a tough decision and a no-brainer, if that makes any sense. I wanted to be sure that I was being respectful to Mandy, so I asked around and overwhelmingly the tribe wanted me to continue with it, so that’s where I took my cue.

“I also tend to make the best decisions when I trust my instinct, and it just feels right! I can’t think of a better ongoing tribute to Mandy than to continue what we started.”

Fitzpatrick said Extra Dirty virgins would be in for a treat if they came along on March 6, with partygoers forming a close-knit but welcoming bond over the years.

“You get the feeling that everyone knows each other. I think one of Mandy’s great achievements over the years was that she brought so many people together. I still see people on the dancefloor who used to come to Crash at Phoenix nearly 10 years ago.

“The tribe is fiercely loyal and they love the sound of Extra Dirty. It’s a sound that seems to stimulate a lot of dirty dancefloor action — and we love that!”
