Faces of Mardi Gras under the lens
As part of the Head On Photo Festival’s 200 events being held throughout Sydney during May, Jamie Williams’ exhibition On Parade — portraits from the Sydney Mardi Gras — is at the Global Gallery, Paddington, from today until May 15. These images, made over several years in the marshalling area immediately before the Parade’s start, reveal a variety of ages and faces, shapes and sizes, not to mention senses of style, highlighting the truly diverse nature of Mardi Gras.
Other highlights of the festival in coming days include the official launch at Customs House on Friday evening, where the Portrait Prize winners of more than $50,000 in prizes will be announced, and a seminar for budding photographers at Bondi Pavilion this weekend with top national and international photographers (including US Magnum photographer David Alan Harvey) presenting.
