MasterChef’s queer contenders

MasterChef’s queer contenders

The top 20 aspiring cooks featured on Channel 10’s MasterChef include two queer chefs: Tom Mosby, a 39-year-old solicitor from Brisbane, and Michelle Darlington, a 45-year-old bookshop owner from the NSW south coast.

These devout foodies are vying to win the title of Australia’s first MasterChef, which would see them win $100,000, a publishing deal for their own cookbook, and the chance to follow their dream career. Both are in long-term relationships, and credit their early success in the competition to the support of their respective partners.

Mosby, born of a Torres Strait Island background, originally developed his cooking skills out of necessity.

In the Torres Strait, it would be traditional for women to cook, so my mother and two sisters would cook for our family. My own cooking skills started when I was 16, he explained.

Darlington’s own culinary conversion came relatively late in life, when she had a moment of realisation on a cooking tour two years ago.

I’m a lesbian who eats tofu and meat and thinks food is about the connection between love and life, she said.

  1. I can’t believe there is a subject titled Two Queer Chefs – who cares about their sexuality?
This program is supposed to be about cooking skills not sex – I love the show but can’t see the point of this site. Brie Wiessner

  2. I am a lesbian in my thirties from Sydney, and Michelle is a role model to me, such a truly talented individual. I met her and her partner a few years ago when my partner and I were shopping for some jewellery in thier gorgeous spiritual bookshop in Berry. The two gorgeous women invited us up to stay at Jera Jamal, thier magical retreat in Jaspers Brush. We drove up and were greeted by Llamas on the windy dirt road and we stayed for the weekend in the mongolian inspired timber Yurt surrounded by mountains and the ocean, it was truly magical. Jera Jamal comes highly reccommended to any dyke couple (or single) looking for a romantic weekend away from the big smoke, or even just a place to chill out and meditate for as long as you need.

I plan on staying up thier again later in the year, just before I go in for IUI to relax and unwind, and prepare for our bubba.
I have since realised that Michelle is also an acclaimed photographer, with her own extensive portfolio on the net.
This woman is blessed with success, and I truly look up to her.
For her Masterchef journey; I wish Michelle the very best, and would love to see her go all the way!
