Perez Hilton pushes Eric’s fortunes

Thanks to gay celebrity blogger Perez Hilton and a killer voice, US singer Eric Hutchinson is a performer to listen to. Recently his single Rock N Roll was the most played song on radio and after 14 weeks in the ARIA charts still holds a top 20 ranking.

It was Hilton’s discovery which put him in the limelight. Sales in the US jumped after a high school friend emailed the blogger a link to Hutchinson’s MySpace page.

I made the album and put it out myself independently. A friend of mine from school sent it to Hilton and he liked it. Within a day people were downloading it and it shot to the top ten of iTunes. Suddenly I had record labels calling me up -” it was quick and unexpected, Hutchinson said.

He [Hilton] has been really great and we have gotten to be friends. He is a big music fan and luckily his readers connected with my music.

Before signing to Warner Music, his album, Sounds Like This, was the highest-charting album by an unsigned act on iTunes.

Hutchinson recently toured Australia with Jason Mraz. His music has been described as intelligent pop and he thanks his influences The Beatles and Stevie Wonder for his musical insight.

It’s in the mould of the people I love and music that is catchy but has thought behind it, he said.

There are themes about the grey areas in life. I think a lot of songs and movies are too black and white -” it’s either I love you or I hate you. My songs are about -˜I love you but I love your sister more’ or -˜you drive me crazy’. There is complexity in life that I’m trying to explore.
