Comedy for community campaigner

Some of Australian comedy’s biggest names will unite in laughter to raise money for a quiet community achiever next month.

Longtime local LGBTI health promotion campaigner Meg Gulbin suffered an acquired brain injury 18 months ago and is still recovering in hospital.

An all-star line-up including comedians Fiona O’Loughlin, Rachel Berger, Cal Wilson and Geraldine Hickey have banded together to help support Gulbin and her family and to raise money to meet medical expenses.

“There are people who work away tirelessly in our community, selflessly dedicating their lives and talents to help the rest of us,” gala organisers said.

“Meg Gulbin is one of those people and now, she needs our help.”

It’s the second time a fundraiser has been held for Gulbin since her injury. She is expected to make close to a full recovery eventually.

“Her survival can be put down to the same grit and determination that saw her fight homophobic bureaucracies and agitate for change in GLBTI and women’s health services for over two decades,” organisers said.

Gulbin has worked with the Victorian Government’s diversity unit on LGBTI issues, particularly raising the profile of intersex concerns. She was also responsible for Pride and Joy, the first book in Australia targeted specifically at lesbian parents and started the first LGBTI parents group in Victoria.

The gala is a tribute to Gulbin’s sense of humour and use of comedy in her health promotion work.

Meg’s Benefit 2 is on Friday, March 2 at Collingwood Town Hall. Doors open at 6pm for 7pm show. Tickets $47.50 +bf.
