Gay Catholic priest visiting Sydney

One of the world’s few openly gay Catholic priests is speaking in Sydney this week.
James Alison, an English theologian and a former Dominican monk now living in Brazil, is on a speaking tour of Australia this month.
Alison will give a talk, “The challenge of an opening horizon: The Gospel shape of gay and lesbian freedom,” at Paddington Uniting Church at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 23.
In the talk, Alison will explore his sense of the vacuum in the life of the church as the anti-gay ecclesiastical and biblical discourses with which gay men and lesbians have traditionally been characterised ebb.
Alison will pose the question “How are we to undergo being turned into church by the one who’s Gospel has set us free?”
The talk has been organised by the Eremos Institute, an ecumenical group encouraging friendly dialogue between Christians of all backgrounds.
Entry is $15 or $10 for concession card holders or Eremos members.
Alison will also speak in the CBD on Friday, September 24 and in Parramatta on Saturday, September 25.
