Give the gift of equality on Mother’s Day

Ahead of Mothers’ Day this Sunday, May 8, national spokesperson for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Shelley Argent, has urged mums across Australia to stand up for marriage equality.

“All mums want their children to have the same opportunities and joys in life regardless of whether they are gay or straight”, Argent said.

“That’s why I’m urging the mothers of Australia to stand up for equality this weekend by sending a message of support for marriage equality to their local politician.”

Argent said a new website called Mums 4 Equality makes it easy for supporters of equality to send an email.

“All you have to do is enter your name, address and postcode and click send. The more concerned mums the pollies hear from, the more likely they are to support this important reform.

“As mothers we can give our children the best start in life, providing them with love, support and the best education we can, we can meet every material want and need, but we can’t give them equality, only the politicians can do that.”

Other mums supporting Mums 4 Equality include Sky News presenter Mia Freedman, former Australian Marriage Equality (AME) president Kerryn Phelps and her wife, Jackie Stricker-Phelps.

AME national convener Alex Greenwich said he hopes Australia’s mums tell our national leaders they want all their children to have the same rights.

“In the first hour after the launch of the new site, over 1500 letters were sent to federal MPs in support of marriage equality, indicating the concern that many Australian mums have about this issue”, he said.

“We urge all mums who want their children to grow up in a country where everyone is treated equally to go to the site and send an email to their local MP.”
