Go West

Normally I begin each column with a story from my past. Some would call it sharing and others may call it over-sharing. I like to add a personal touch when I’m writing.

However this week it’s not about me. I would like to thank a very special community member -” one who has supported the Western Sydney community for more years than I think she cares to remember.
This person has been involved in Western Sydney community social dances such as Castaways, Frannies Bar, PASH, Diamonds and Pearls, and her most recent, Heaven.

I’m sure that most will know by now I’m talking about Beverly Buttercup.

Often called the mouth of the west for good reasons, Beverly has promoted many community events and been a big supporter of charities. Organisations like the Western Suburbs Haven, the Three Sisters Mountains group and also ACON have benefited from her efforts. Many hours have been broadcast through Queer Out West 89.3 FM as well as her online community column for SSO.

More importantly it’s her habit of never saying no and always doing as much as she can. She has tirelessly ensured that the Western Sydney gay and lesbian community has a safe space to socialise. Beverly has heavily promoted community events, fundraisers and red ribbons through her countless volunteer hours performing, and selling raffle tickets.

For all that Beverly does, and the support given to our Western Sydney community, I say a public thank you.

info: If you want any information about groups, services, organisations or community events taking place in western Sydney, you can contact Matt Vaughan at ACON on 9206 2064 or [email protected].
