Network welcomes 200th member

A network of workers dedicated to meeting the needs of same-sex attracted and gender questioning youth (SSAGQ) has welcomed its 200th member.

The Rainbow Network is a union of workers from across regional and metropolitan Victoria which includes teachers, welfare officers, youth workers, psychologists, nurses, GPs, social workers, community workers and police officers.

Set up in 1998, the network began as a small group of workers who began meeting informally to discuss issues within their work around meeting the needs of these young people. Since then, with the emergence of new SSAGQ youth groups and a growing recognition of their needs, the network has continued to grow.

“This network just goes from strength to strength,” Rainbow Network coordinator Roz Ward said.

“The more workers we have on board, the greater our pool of resources, ideas and information-sharing.”

Providing opportunities for workers to exchange ideas, the network develops partnerships between community agencies, health services and schools aimed at empowering young people to participate in decision-making and community development. Workers use the network to advocate for SSAGQ young people, as well as developing activities for young people to meet and participate in discussions.

It also offers its members free professional development and information sessions on the latest research, government initiatives or community information.

The Rainbow Network is currently funded by the Department of Health and is hoping to work with the new state government to continue building the network beyond 2011.
