Boys on the beach

Boys on the beach

The Speedo versus boardshort debate has long loomed our beaches, watering holes, swimming pools and even the odd foam party. It seems the trends in our swimwear very much depend on what the cutting edge crazes in America and the chic looks in Europe are.

Throughout my travels and studies of beach fashions, I’ve noticed two key trends -“ the Europeans like to get keep it traditional with the sexy Speedo and American designers look at the boardshort.

But things are changing -“ especially on the Aussie front. Beachgoers are mixing both styles together to form the vibrant trunk or the popular surf shorts, evident in brands like aussieBum, Calvin Klein, Ed Hardy, Iqoniq and Billabong.

aussieBum is shaping up to be the gay men’s choice with a range including uniquely shaped trunks and sexy Speedos, all designed with bright camp colours and available in a Wonder Jock format … so you don’t have to worry about the cold.

Iqoniq is a boutique brand with a high fashion edge. Their swimwear comes in simple colours ideal for the conservative but fashion-conscious beach lover.

If you like that butch and bling look on the sands then look no further then Ed Hardy. Think simple designs in the garment but with electrifying patterns of skulls and roses.

For men who like simplicity and sophistication in a designer brand, the trusted Calvin Klein is as reliable as ever. The light blue surf shorts are to die for and the quality is still among the best.

And finally, there is nothing more Aussie and likeable than Billabong. It’s best suited to the surf boy or beach bum with a conservative approach to swimwear. This year’s summer garments are eye-catching and will create interest on the beach.

Next time you want to buy a swimsuit, it’s important to find something that suits your body shape and you feel comfortable in -” there’s no point wearing something that you can’t work.

  1. I know that this looks like an old story but yes there are those that either would wear the old style swimwear or the boardies, but however, there are a few men out there that just don’t like what’s on offer, I can assure you that there are some men who would rather wear a onepiece swimwear than what’s on offer, I for one know of at least a couple of men who do so, probably not here in Australia, but they do overseas, this might be a rather grey area in what’s supposed to be a light hearted subject, I’m talking about the samd kind of onepiece swimwear women would wear, not for fettish or anything like that, unfortunately the way some people behave would make it appear that way, the men that I know of, wear them for what they are meant for, swimming and I for one are one of them, well I do so because I have a masive scar on my chest from open heart surgury when I was a kid at the age of eight years old in 1978, I still feel male but like me and a lot of these other guys, we feel more comfortable in them, in the sense that not as mutch of our skin is exposed to the sun, after all we all deserve something nice to wear.

  2. Ever seen photo’s of mens swimwear of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s ?
One may be surprised at the variety of styles in there era’s and some of the aspects of these styles are often reflected in todays swimwear.
